The Vinegar Pie Victory Tour

Eatonville Restaurant and Annalee Ash at Macy's "American Icons" launch (May 16, 2013)

Since winning the 2013 Makes-Me-Wanna SHOUT! Pie Baking Challenge, Annalee Ash has been taking her victory lap around DC starting with the launch of Macy’s “American Icons” campaign at the Metro Center store. Eatonville Restaurant provided the Vinegar Pie tasting samples — and we ran out before the launch event ended. Door prizes were given away including a 3-volume cookbook set from King Arthur Flour, and a gift card from Eatonville Restaurant. This is the second Macy’s event for the Makes-Me-Wanna SHOUT! Baking Challenge.

Making good on our promise to Martha’s Table at the Final Five, Annalee demonstrated how to make Vinegar Pie with middle school students from Martha’s Table’s Bridge program. In Annalee’s own words…

I probably learned as much from the experience as the youth in that I was pleasantly surprised by their unbridled enthusiasm. The boys were just as excited to participate as the girls. Everyone wanted and did participate. They read the recipe, chose the ingredient, the proper measuring tool and created two pies – with “a little direction” from Michon [Boston] and me. Whether it was cracking open and adding an egg, or measuring out melted and chilled butter (“eeeewwww”), feeling the dough, whisking (!), or edging the pie, I have no doubt they now will tell anyone and everyone they now know how to bake a pie from scratch – and even some chemistry of cooking – like why we cool the butter before adding it to the egg filling – or why we add ice water to the flour mixture to create the dough – and why we don’t want to overwork the dough. All things I learned while baking my pies during the Challenge.
